Midrash Echad met as a regular Shabbat and discussed how we should celebrate the Fall Feast Days as a harmonious group. We emphasize harmonious because many disputes and divisions have resulted from the siting as of the moon, and the counting of the Aviv Barley. This is important because these two "witnesses" set the entire year's calendar. While most of the world follows the Hillel II calendar, we understand that its origin was made out of a desire to keep Jews in the Diaspora, those displaced from homeland Eretz Yisreal, in celebration at the same time around the world. However, the calculated calendar has some flaws in that Rabbis introduce exceptions to the rules concerning Yom Kippur which arbitrarily move the dates in order to avoid observing Yom Kippur on a Shabbat or disturbing a Shababt. |
